Why did you decide to be a helper in OTARU TAP ROOM?

 

We did not plan on going to Hokkaido during our trip, but the idea of returning in our home country without visiting the northernmost Japan felt like a missed opportunity (especially in winter with all that beautiful snow!) so we looked for a great place to stay and we definitely found one in Otaru Tap Room. The pictures of the guesthouse, the bar, the less-touristy city close to Sapporo sold it for us! And when we started talking to the staff, we wanted to be there even more.

We mainly visited Otaru, Yoichi, Sapporo but we didn’t go skiing since the stations opened right before we left – there’s even one in Otaru (you can see it when you have a walk) and some others a bit further.

I guess Otaru is the kind of city that slowly grows on you. There’s a cute side to it of course, the lovely canal and shopping street, and the snow makes it truly special so it looks like a postcard, but the industrial aspect by the harbour and all the late 19th century architecture inspired by UK’s standards at the time makes it weird enough that you can’t get enough of it (even if the city’s not so big), especially if you’re into taking pictures. The cold lights of dusk by the seashore give you a sensation of being at the end of the world. Explore nature around! It’s incredible.
