I wanted to go to Hokkaïdo. While looking on helpx, I found this place and the proximity to the sea as well as the japanese speaking staff convinced me to give it a try!

Yunohana onsen, explore Otaru and nearby cities, hikes in the surrounding mountains.

We always had a good time going for an onsen trip with the other helpers. I also went many times to UTA ramen and always tried to communicate with my broken japanese with the chef, that was good fun. The times we went to play pool with all the staff was insanely funny too. With the other helpers, we also had a night walk on top of Tenguyama, which was great but probably dangerous cause I later read that bears are more active at dusk. Still alive though 🙂

When I decided to go on a working holiday in Japan, I wanted to work at a guesthouse to experience meeting and interacting with many people. I also had a desire to visit Hokkaido at least once, and among the cities there, I chose to work at Otaru Tap Room because I felt Otaru was a peaceful and happy city. My Japanese skills are still limited, so I was also grateful for the opportunity to work there even without being fluent in Japanese!

What did you do when you had free time?

I spent a lot of time exploring the area. Otaru is peaceful and quiet, yet it’s also a region with many places to visit, so I traveled to various spots. On my days off, I would sometimes take trips to other areas as well. Additionally, I dedicated time to my online work, which I’ve been doing remotely!

Meeting a variety of people was definitely the most memorable part. I made some really good friends, and I have vivid memories of going to izakayas, hot springs, and Tengu Mountain together. Sharing our cultures, having conversations, and studying Japanese in this way was truly enjoyable! Also, although my last days were in early November, I was lucky enough to see snow, so I got to experience snowy views during my last two days. It was an incredibly happy experience.

It was truly a happy and unforgettable month. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude once again to OTARU TAP ROOM and the staff and helpers I worked with for creating this opportunity. I hope to visit Otaru and Otaru Tap Room again someday. Thank you so much!!

Because the last time I went to Hokkaido, I didn’t go to Otaru. This time, I decided to live in Otaru as the first place of my working holiday. Otaru Tap Room is near the UNGA and Station. It’s very convenient to go anywhere.

Chinese, English, and a little bit Japanese

What did you do when you had free time?

Sometimes, I went to tourist attractions or some places that are not famous but still have good views, like Temiya Park. I also went to Yoichi and Oshoro. If I didn’t go out, I studied Japanese with the other helpers.

The experience exceeded my expectations! I hope I can stay longer. I met people from different countries. I talked about lots of things, like language, culture, etc. We also had a Takoyaki party and Nabe party. And went to an izakaya which has delicious local food and to Tengu Yama together. These are wonderful memories in my life. I also really liked the Japanese study group which I could study Japanese with other helpers. It was interesting.

原本單純只是想要找一個短暫停留，又可以欣賞風景的地方，沒想到這兩周的體驗完全超乎我的想像，每一天都很認真的生活，去了原本沒有預想到的地方，遇到來自不同國家的人，談論著彼此國家的文化及語言等等。我還體驗了章魚燒和火鍋派對，除此之外，還和其他小幫手們一起去了當地居酒屋，吃了好吃的當地美食，還去了天狗山看夜景，很高興遇到很棒的夥伴們。另外我還很喜歡和其他小幫手一起組成的日文讀書會，一起讀日文真的很有趣。

私はゲストハウス宿泊自体初めてだったのですが、スタッフの方がとても優しく親切で楽しく過ごすことが出来ました。

ひなちゃんとnaocoffeeのコラボカフェが楽しかったです！

素敵な空間で、ひなちゃんが集めてくれた人たちとお話もできて幸せでした。設備も整ってたし。

あと、かすべのご飯も美味しかった。ルタオの試食とソフトクリームも最高。なるとでお腹いっぱい。 基本食べてました。

I decided to help at Otaru Tap Room, because I wanted to visit Hokkaido and did not want to stay in a big city after leaving Tokyo. I always lived by the sea so Otaru seemed to be a good choice. I found on HelpX the announcement and applied.

I Speak 4 languages fluently and a little bit of Japanese.

What did you do when you had free time?

I hiked a lot during my free time in Otaru alone with Audiobooks. From the hotel near the lighthouse and aquarium to Tenguyama. Otaru is beautiful and has a lot of hidden treasures. I enjoyed coffee every morning with a beautiful view of the canal.

I made too many memories to share in a few sentences. I met wonderful, warm people that made the record-breaking snowstorms feel like a breeze. My best memory would have to be the day we all cooked Japanese and Moroccan food together and went to the Karaoké. That day my heart and stomach were full. Thank you Otaru.

I miss the old building of Otaru Tap Room already. I hope to be sheltered within its walls again soon. The time I spent within it made me grow so much as a Man and enabled me to find things in my personality I did not know existed.
I will come back.

〜Tap Room目指して小樽へ〜

人生初北海道、初小樽旅行はまさかのノープラン訪問！、、、でしたが、ノープラン最高！

初対面の他のゲストの方々と一緒に街巡りをしたり、食事に行ったり、朝日を見に行ったり、、、旅好きオーナーの計らいにとても感謝です。本当にありがとう！

年齢も性別も国境も越えた交流が出来るゲストハウスは私にとって非日常であり、新しい価値観に出会える最高の勉強の場です！

ゲストハウス目指して旅して、そこからその土地を知るのも悪くない！
小樽とーっても好きになりました。

こんにちは。ゆりこです！
1年間移動生活をしていたのですが、最期の地がotarutaproomとなりました。
2ヶ月間の小樽での生活は、今まで経験したことのない新鮮な日々でした。
毎日色んなところからくるゲスト。
barの美味しいクラフトビール。
フランス人カップルとの生活。
フォトウォークで小樽の自然に触れながら写真の撮り合いをしたのも楽しかったです。

そして、何より私は築100年の建物をリノベーションして作られたtaproomの建物がすごくお気に入りでした。
お洒落な空間での生活はとっても居心地が良かったです。
慣れない英語を使ってコミュニケーションをとろうと頑張ったのもいい思い出。

今は、東京の空き家を改築中。
小さい場所ですが、otarutaproomのように色んな人が集まる居心地の良い空間が作れたらと思っています。
